Unanimous decision arrived at between Excise department and DNSU

Dimapur, April 27 (MExN): A timeframe of 45 days has been set for the state government to appoint a chairperson and reconstitute its Committee to study the issues relating to implementation of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act 1989.

Stating this in a press release on Monday, Dimapur Commissioner of Excise Hotolu Swu informed that the decision came about following a consultative meeting between the Nagaland Advisor for Excise, Sericulture & Minority Affairs, Commissioner & Secretary of Excise Department, Departmental officers and the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) on April 26.

According to the release, the house discussed the DNSU’s 20-day ultimatum to the state government demanding review or revocation of the NLTP Act issued on April 19.

In this regard, the student body was “apprised of the existence of a Committee constituted by the Cabinet in November 2019, to study the issues relating to implementation of the NLTP Act 1989,” the release stated. It said that the Committee had already held 2 rounds of meetings on December 7, 2018 and March 7, 2019. However, with the untimely demise of the Chairperson, the government is yet to appoint a new Chairperson to the Committee, it added.

During the meeting, the Advisor is said to have acknowledged the points shared by the student officials and at the same time, reiterated that ample time should be given to the government as the process involves a lot of consensus building and dialogue involving all stakeholders.

As such, it was unanimously decided between the parties that a 45-days timeframe would be given to the government, effective from the date of publication of this press release, to reconstitute the Committee with a new Chairperson, and table a report at the earliest.
