Lone Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland, KG Kenye, Thursday asserted that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, was a blot on the face of the world’s largest democracy and does not befit the image of the nation.

Speaking at the 9th Biennial General Conference of the Nagaland Law Students’ Federation (NLSF) at the Jubilee Memorial Centre, Lerie colony, Kohima on February 24, the MP maintained that existence of APFSA was an “insult” to the very teachings and beliefs of Mahatma Gandhi.

MP Rajya Sabha said “Our fight is not with the people of India, but with the Government of India on certain issues like the AFSPA”, which he said was “a very contentious issue” that had come forth after the Oting incident.

As a member of the parliament, Kenye said he tried his best to bring the issue to the floor. However, he said that unfortunately the matter could not be presented on the floor of the house and missed the chance. Kenye, whose tenure comes to an end by first week of April this year, urged his successors to take up the matter.

MP said that the quality of the society may be depicted by the refined laws that exist in it. “If one wants to understand the mentality of the society’s position, it is best to study the laws governing the people and would directly provide insight in the community,” Kenye said.

He suggested the law students to hold seminars and symposiums on topic of AFPSA with various speakers. Touching upon the issues such Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 and Article 37(A), Kenye encouraged the legal professionals to educate and enlighten the people on such issues.

Exhorting the gathering, director general prisons, Rupin Sharma, stated that the law in Nagaland has changed, but “our mindset” has not. He urged the younger generation to put more effort and direct the society to a new platform. Further, he suggested that Nagaland University should have a law campus with integrated programmes. He also emphasized on the need to set up a government law college in the state.

In his presidential address, NLSF president C Talimoa, urged the state government to establish directorate of prosecution and High Court in the state.

Earlier, greetings was delivered by secretary (judicial), department of justice and law, Nino Iralu. On the occasion, Kohima Law College and Sweven group presented special numbers. The programme was chaired by human rights coordinator, Neiteo Koza, vote of thanks was proposed by NLSF women coordinator Kivitoli Swu while benediction was offered by senior pastor Neiko Mero, Khuzami Chakesang Baptist Church.
