Dimapur | February 26

The one day Bharat Vyapar Bandh called by the Confederation of All India Traders was observed across Nagaland on February 26 with total shutdown of all business and commercial activities.

Reports pouring in from all districts said the bandh was observed in strict compliance to the call of Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce (CNCCI).

When contacted, CNCCI President, Dr Khekugha Murru, said the bandh passed off peacefully without any untoward incident in all the district headquarters and towns.

In the commercial hub Dimapur, the bandh started from 8:00 am and continued till 4pm. In the main business centres of the city, all shops and business houses downed their shutters. In most colonies, even the small pan shops remained close.

Members of the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) went on an inspection drive in major commercial areas to ensure compliance of the bandh call by traders.

DCCI President, Akashe Zhimomi, told The Morung Express that DCCI decided to support the bandh as the amendments in the GST would not only affect traders and businessmen but also the common man and consumers.

On the other hand, Zhimomi also said that business in Dimapur has almost come to a halt due to heavy taxation imposed by various groups.

Vice President, DCCI, V Shikuto Achumi, concurred that DDCI’s decision to implement the bandh call was taken after taking into consideration not only the welfare of traders and businessmen but also the general public.

“The adverse effect on business community will ultimately land on the shoulders of the consumers, who have undergone enough hardships due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

The CNCCI President said if taxation compliance is simplified, then it would not only ease the burden of traders/businessmen but also enhance revenues of both central and state governments.

On the recent reduction of fuel prices by the Nagaland Government, Murru expressed gratitude to the State Government for heeding to the pleas of the CNCCI and the public. He however said the reduction in fuel price is negligible and that there is no tangible impact on businessmen or general public.

“The State Government should try to reduce fuel prices further, at least at par with Assam state. At present, most vehicles going or coming from Mokokchung or some other districts refuel their tanks in Assam. If the state government fixes fuel prices at par with Assam, then there will be competition between petrol outlets in Dimapur and neighbouring districts in Assam,” the CNCCI President added.
