Blood Bank Dimapur registers record drawal in Sept

The Blood Bank, District Hospital, Dimapur, recorded handling over 4000 units of blood in the month of September, 2023. The number was well over the prevailing high of 2940 units recorded in the month of August. The figures were as per data disclosed by the Blood Bank incharge, Dr Temsu Jamir on the sideline of a blood donation camp organised on account of the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day on October 1 at the District Hospital.

The unparalleled jump in requests for blood and blood components has been attributed to the dengue outbreak in Dimapur and outlying areas with platelets requisitions accounting for the majority of blood drawals handled by the Blood Bank since the seasonal outbreak began in June-July. In July, it handled 1080 requisitions. Prior to this year’s outbreak, monthly drawals did not exceed 900 units even in peak dengue seasons and was averaging 700-800 units a month.

Give blood, share life
At Sunday’s donation camp, organised under the theme— Be there for someone else, give blood, share life, around 70 units of whole blood was collected from voluntary donors from various organisations, besides a bank, a village and a college. They included Dimapur Gorkha Union, Shree Agarwal Mahasabha, Server Club, Dimapur Bongs, Rotary Club, JCI, Red Cross, Network of Blood Donors, Muslim Council Dimapur (MCD), Haemophilia Society, Maharsi Sadguru Shadap Haldev Asram, Marwari Yuva Manch, Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation (DAYO), Sovima village, HDFC Bank and Trinity Theological College.

National Voluntary Blood Donation Day is an annual national event celebrated on October 1 to raise awareness about blood donation and promoting voluntary blood donation. It was first observed on October 1, 1975 by the Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology.

Dr Temsu said that the event seeks to inspire voluntary blood donation and also to acknowledge the voluntary donors. “It is to inspire more and more people and also to inspire those, who donate only to relatives and friends, to donate voluntarily to others as well,” he said.

Asaduddin Ahmad, Social Service Secretary of the MCD, said that “helping a fellow human” has been the primary motivation behind the MCD’s collaboration with the blood bank. According to him, his orgnisation has helped find around a 100 voluntary donors since the dengue outbreak, this year.
