BSI supported botanical garden in Nagaland

Nagaland Urban Development & Municipal Affairs Advisor Zhaleo Rio has recently inaugurated Botanical Garden at Modern College Piphema campus along Dimapur-Kohima 4 lane National Highway.

This Botanical Garden of Modern College is the only college in North East to be supported by Botanical Survey of India (BSI), Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change.

During the inaugural programme on May 8, Rio planted Castanopsis Indica species. Modern College has opened this Botanical Garden (5 acres of land (217,800 sq.ft.) to conserve and protect environment.

The objectives of this Botanical Garden is to facilitate ex-situ conservation for protecting and propagating species which are rare, threatened and endemic to Nagaland and North East India, to develop into a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for research, education and response to the conservation needs of rare, threatened and endangered plants and  species, to serve as an educational and recreational site through the development of facilities and services that will benefit both communities (students and residents)  and tourists alike.

This Garden also aim to raise a sustainable as well as viable medicinal plant garden conservatory, to integrate conservation activities with agricultural and genetic resources development, to disseminate to knowledge of plant conservation and preservation to the public and create public awareness.

This botanical garden has introduced 1350 plants.

It has water Harvesting Shed, Vermi Compost Unit, street lights (Solar), foot paths, signages, green Houses, bee colonies etc.

The principal investigator is Dr. Kate Dandesh Kumar and Kaikho Losu as development manager.

Modern College Piphema campus is spread over 102 acres of land. It lies 22 km from state capital Kohima and around 18 km away from Chümoukedima.
