CHECK GATE BAN: Nagaland govt seeks citizens participation in implementation

Following the state government’s order to ban all intra state check gates issued on May 19, Nagaland Chief Secretary J Alam said the decision was taken considering the various issues about check gates, demands by various organisations and complaints received.

Addressing media persons this afternoon at his office conference hall, New Secretariat, J Alam said “finally, the government, taking into consideration all these aspects took a decision to ban all the intra state check gates.”

Ensuing the order, Alam said implementation was started on the next day (May 20) by closing down 21 gates out of 34 whereby only 13 inter-state check gates are in operation today.
Apart from the two given WhatsApp number with the control room set up at PHQ, Alam informed that signage has been prominently displayed in all the check gates along with publication of the same in the newspapers.

Ever since, he informed that it has received eight (8) complaints and reports on these numbers, out of which two were just testing and six were actionable information which, the police is ‘actually taking further follow up action.’

Highlighting how the order is being implemented, the Chief Secretary said the inspection teams led by the respective district Deputy Commissioners and other officers have been regularly inspecting the check gates and giving their reports.

“Our understanding is that the order is being implemented in letter and spirit,” said Alam and expressed optimism that this will bring about some improvements.

“Because of the removal of check gates, there should be a positive impact on the cost of transportation and improvement in the prices also. That aspect is being monitored,” he maintained.
While acknowledging the support of the various civil society organisations who have welcomed the decision of the government, he appealed the citizens of the state to make full use of this facility which is being provided by the government by sharing information with the police so that action can be taken.

“If this system works properly, there will be no need for anyone to raise this issue in any other platform,” viewed Alam.

Reiterating the commitment of the state government for good governance, he maintained that this decision has been taken with that commitment, and was hopeful that people will extend their active cooperation towards the successful implementation of the same.

DGP Nagaland, T John Longkumer highlighted the six information received from various places in the state, which are mostly reports on illegal collection and demand of tax.

Stating that ‘time is of essence,’ he appealed the public to immediately inform the police of any crimes apart from illegal taxation and extortion.

Home Commissioner, Abhijit Sinha also addressed the press conference.
