Dimapur, February 3 (MExN): Just a day after the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) hit out at the Modi-led Central government for what it termed as a lack of financial packages for Nagaland, the party once again carried a slew of attacks against the Neiphiu Rio government of NDPP and BJP for “exhibiting blatant lack of respect for public money and openly indulging in corruption without fear.”

In a press statement issued by Sujata Paul, All India Congress Committee (AICC) Media Coordinator and Temjenyanger Longkumer, PCC Secretary and spokesperson, NPCC on February 2, the party alleged that the BJP at the centre has encouraged the “Neiphiu Rio government to shamelessly indulge in corruption.”

They also pointed the non-functional “shopping complex and parking plaza” at Forest Colony, Dimapur. According to information available through RTI, the state planning board in a meeting held on 9th June 2011 at the Chief Minister’s office decided to construct this massive structure which it says is a shopping complex. The funds apparently came from the Ministry of Urban Development and HUDCO for the construction cost of Rs 43 crore, they stated.

They also questioned since when have Forest Departments or Ministries begun to manage shopping complexes and claimed that it was a brazen case of corruption by the Rio government. The structure wears a dilapidated look and this is criminal waste of public money. “Nowhere in the world does this happen, and hence, it is obvious that this is a structure which has been constructed for some private entity,” they said.

The party stated that the people of Nagaland chose a government and expected accountability but have not only gotten a government was inefficient but also arrogant in its attitude indulging in misuse of funds. It is incumbent on the government to explain who the private entity is that they are thinking of passing on the building to. If the construction of the building was completed a long time ago, why has revenue generation not been done till now? Who is the private entity that the building has been given to or the government intended to do so? If not a private entity, why is the construction with overgrown grass not been utilised for some constructive activity in Public Interest.

Furthermore, they queried as to why the government was not providing employment opportunities to its youths and entrepreneurs and why the place was not utilised for start ups, self help groups and others.
