In the Nagaland leg of the 9th Rozgar Mela, appointment letters were handed away to 111 fresh recruits in various departments/agencies of the Government of India. Union Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas, Labour & Employment, Rameswar Teli handed away the letters at a programme, in Dimapur, hosted by the office of the Postmaster General, North East-II Region, Dimapur, on September 26.

The 9th Rozgar Mela, held in 46 locations across the country, saw the GoI handing away around 51,000 appointment letters to freshly inducted recruits. In the North-east, it was held in Dimapur, Shillong and Guwahati. The appointments handed away in Dimapur were for posts in the Department of Posts, Health, Education and FCI.

According to the Press Information Bureau, the “Rozgar Mela (job fair) is a step towards fulfillment of the commitment of the PM to accord highest priority to employment generation.” This initiative was launched by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on October 22, 2020 with the objective of filling up some 10 lakh posts said to be lying vacant in the various departments and agencies of the GoI.

MoS Teli, in his address, said that the government’s employment mantra, over and above filling vacancies, has been to reducing employment and generating new employment or promoting self-employment. While stating that the appointment of the new recruits marks the beginning of their contribution to the nation’s self-reliance and economic growth, he said that the GoI’s priority has been to create new employment opportunities, with initiatives like Digital India, Smart City Mission, Atal Renewal and Transformation Mission, Self-reliant India Employment Scheme, MNREGA and so on.

Under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, he informed that the oil companies have been directed to put thrust on investing in employment generation. Recognising the importance of women in the labour force, he said that the government is striving for equal pay for equal work and encouraging oil companies to invest in employment opportunities for women.

He added that the eShram portal seeks to provide social security and benefits to around 38 crore workers in the unorganized sector. It is a National Database of Unorganized Workers (NDUW) seeded with Aadhaar. As per the eShram portal, it is “for optimum realization of their employability and extend the benefits of the social security schemes to them. It is the first-ever national database of unorganised workers including migrant workers, construction workers, gig and platform workers, etc.”The government is also focused on the social security of workers, with the Ministry of Labor and Employment launching ESIC 2.0 to modernize and expand the Employee State Insurance (ESI) scheme across India, enhancing medical facilities for workers nationwide, Teli said.

On oil exploration in Nagaland
The MoS for Petroleum declined to comment on the oil exploration conundrum in Nagaland vis-à-vis the conflict between the country’s petroleum law and Article 371 (A). But he said that he would want Nagaland to explore and extract the state’s oil reserves for revenue and development. He reminded that neighbouring Assam is already extracting oil from which the state government is earning royalty.

According to him, the world at large would be transitioning more and more towards green energy in the coming decades.
