Dimapur, July 2 (MExN): The Central Nagaland Students’ Association (CNSA) and Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) on Friday urged the Nagaland Government to find long-term solutions to the frequent border issues between the state and Assam.
In a joint press release, CNSA President, R Sunep Pongen and AKM President, Nungdokyanger Ao stated that the two organisations visited Yajang C Village of Mokokchung district on learning about the reports of Assam Police and some Assam villagers deliberately destroying standing crops of cultivated land and plantations belonging to Yajang C Village on June 27 while all the villagers were attending church service.
“On spot verification of the site made on June 29, CNSA and AKM have come to the conclusion that the land in question belong to Yajang C Village (Ao Naga) and is well within the territory of Yajang C village. In fact, even the tea estates beyond the land in question belong to Yajang C Village which is being cultivated by Assam Tea Estates by paying tax to the Yajang C Village Council,” the press release stated.
Criticizing what it termed as ‘manipulative acts’ of the Assam side, the CNSA and AKM also accused them of misusing their media houses to spread fake news and make illegitimate claims over the Ao Naga ancestral territory.
“The CNSA and AKM, therefore, demand the government of Assam to compensate the affected Yajang C villagers and take necessary action against the concerned Assam Police personnel and intruders involved in the June 27 incident,” the release stated.
With regard to the Government of Nagaland, the organisations maintained that “The affected villagers further stated that they will carry out befitting course of actions as the Nagaland government is not taking the border issue seriously.”
“The CNSA and AKM urge the government to urgently look into the matter before the tension and conflict intensifies. The state frequently experiences border issues, and if left unresolved, they would exacerbate existing tensions,” it said. The government should give the issue top priority and find long-term solutions to ensure that the lives of people in the surrounding areas are preserved and saved, it added.
