Dimapur, July 28 (MExN): An irrigation dam located at New Jalukie village under Peren district was reportedly washed away due to heavy flood on July 26.

According to a press release received here on Wednesday, the dam, locally known as Nkwakreu irrigation dam, was constructed and maintained by local farmers who depend on it as a water source for their fields. The agricultural land covering some few hectares will be impossible to cultivate without the damaged dam as there is no alternate source, it said.

As per the release, the affected farmers reportedly approached the authorities, including the concerned department, ‘to act swiftly for timely restoration as the main source of the local farmers of New Jalukie village and surrounding areas are basically of paddy cultivation.’

The release also stated that in a telephonic conversation with one of the affected farmers, “the Water Resource department Peren advised the affected farmers to approach the district administration for immediate assistance under disaster management, assuring that possible technical assistance in assessment of the lost will be rendered.”

Meanwhile, it said that the affected farmers sought the district administration’s attention through the media ‘to understand the seriousness of the matter and to extend timely restoration of the damaged dam under any appropriate available programme.’
