Kigwema Students’ Union marks 75 years anniversary

The 75th anniversary of Kigwema Students’ Union (KSU) under the theme “Towards a sustainable future” was held at Kholera, Kigwema on December 29 and 30.

Speaking as inaugural guest today after launching the jubilee souvenir, Minister for Women Resource Development and Horticulture, Salhoutuonuo Kruse highlighted the need to take up agri and allied entrepreneurial means with a demand-oriented approach which has potential to tell or promote our organic products outside the State and export markets.

Kruse said that there are various opportunities available through government schemes under the leadership of the Chief Minister and emphasised the potential in agri-allied departments. Additionally, she stressed the importance of reviving the weaving and textile sector, especially among the younger generation.

The speaker stressed on the need to adopt technology in line with sustaining age old practices like weaving, farming among other which have huge scope and prospect in the market and without smart technology and techniques it would diminish. 

She also suggested the packaging and sale of products such as rice, flowers, and spices like turmeric. These organic products are saleable both within and outside the state, with the possibility of expanding to international markets. Kruse emphasised the importance of understanding and meeting market demands to generate revenue. 

Kruse encouraged the students to work diligently, asserting that perseverance is the key to success and expressed her joy at being part of the 75th anniversary celebration, attributing their success to divine blessings and the advent of early education to the village.

In his introductory note, KSU President Mezhüvi Thorie highlighted that 2023 served as a period of growth, presenting numerous learning experiences and fostering a sense of unity among people. Thorie said that inherent kindness and goodness are fundamental traits in human beings, further contributing to the positive aspects of the year.

Dr Dietho-o Yhoshü, former MLA and Senior Citizen speaking about maneuvering the future said to becoming what we love, he called to imbibe a policy of being positive by practicing and not just hearing and knowing. Yhoshü underlined qualities to adopt to become our future, which are to learning to say thanks to God and being grateful for life for everything, learning to say yes to life always prepared and ready to all calls of life. These qualities, he asked not to bargain because it brings surprises and brings contentment in life and brings gratitude to all things. The elder called to treat all duties and responsibilities as opportunities. 

He also cited the importance of sowing good seeds in fertile soil, waiting for the right time and season and asserted that the best and only way for a fruitful future and that there was no other way.

Pastor, Union Baptist Church, Visato Yhoshü prayed for the programme and anniversary song was presented by Anniversary choir, while solidarity greetings were presented by Naga Students’ Federation and Angami Students’ Union. 

Elderly prayer was pronounced by Former chairman, KVC, Zapu-o Zhasa and the programme was chaired by Former President, KSU, Vilekho Belho. It was followed by the release of the KSU 75th anniversary souvenir by the special guest.

The concluding session was graced by Vikhweno Chale, Deputy Director of Administration at Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, NCS, as the guest. The programme was chaired by Seyieneino Yhoshü, former General Secretary of KSU.

Following this, the Kigwema Students’ Union Executives (2024-2026) were introduced, along with resolutions and pledges.

Yesterday during the introductory session, Medo Yhokha, former MLA and Advisor, Government of Nagaland, who was speaking as guest opined that today the world is very competitive in health, education and other fields. However, today education has lost its value when in contrast yesterday a job was waiting for us. 

Yhokha said today education was just a piece of paper to qualify a person for competing in an exam to get a job. 

Yhokha said government job advertisements have been stopped for six years. However, opportunities have opened up including Grade 3 and 4 under NSSB and NPSC under the Government of Nagaland. This has paved way for 9000 vacancies. He added that 78 job advertisements were advertised as such fair employment through proper channel has been opened to the youths. 

The former advisor encouraged students to take up entrepreneurship, music, unexplored markets and other extracurricular activities. He further added that today we need contemporary role models to share stories, motivate and encourage our youths to meet the growing competition in technology marred by the substitution of Artificial Intelligence. 

Mentioning the importance of preserving our environment and wildlife, Yhokha said wildlife stories has become a thing of the past and environmental regulations have till date not been implemented strongly, while calling to rehabilitate forests, not feast on wildlife and pollute by regions.

Yesterday the flag hoisting was administered by NCC Girls. Elderly blessing was given by Neisakuolie Mera, Head GB, Kigwema Village. Others who spoke during the session were Village council chairman Balie Kere and Thepfüralie Zütso and Vikhwe Kiso, Former Chairmen. Anniversary choir presented song.
