Major fire breaks out in Kohima

A massive fire broke out on Monday evening at Mao Market, BOC area in Kohima gutting down several shops and residential homes. At the time of filing of this report, the fire which was yet to be contained had spread towards Porterlane colony, Kohima.

According to official sources, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. “We are all busy trying to extinguish the fire, so investigations will take time,” said the source.  

“More fire tenders has been dispatched from Chiephobozou, Khuzama, Chümoukedima and Dimapur,” said another official source.

Witnesses also mentioned that patients at Bethel Medical Centre were evacuated and safely transferred to other hospitals.

The fire is said to have started around 4:00 pm which spread quickly in the much congested adjacent houses in the area. Mao market is a major shopping centre for South Kohima residents. Mention may be made that the market is located opposite the Nagaland Fire and Emergency services station, Kohima.
