Minister Kruse emphasises on need for more women leadership in Nagaland

Minister for Women Resource Development & Horticulture, Salhoutuonuo Kruse cited the power of education, importance of self reliant and role of women in leadership as ‘crucial’ for the progress and development of the society.

Speaking at the 11th general session of the Chokri Area Mother’s Association (CAMA) held at Khulazu Bawe under Phek district as the special guest, Kruse said access to education equips women with necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in life. Self-reliance, she said is essential for women not only to support themselves and their families financially, but also which gives women a sense of independence and empowerment. As key stakeholders of the society, the Minister said ‘women have time and again proved their nettle in leadership roles, and emphasised on the need for more women leadership in the state to build just society.’

Kruse also stressed on the need for the women and mothers to inculcate and teach the children the values of kindness, compassion, integrity and honesty to enable the future generations to live with purpose and integrity wherever they are placed.

The Minister also lauded the Chakhesang women for progressing better than the others in all aspects of lives – be it education, weaving, farming etc.

Chakhesang Mother’s Association President, Zhonelü Tünyi, shared her concern on the importance of preserving one’s roots, culture and tradition.

In this fast paced ever changing world, she observed that it is easy to overlook the significance of one’s past. To this end, she urged the mothers to teach and influence the children to appreciate of ‘who we are and from where we come from.’ Today, she stated that it has become more essential to hold on to one’s culture, traditions and the good values that have been passed down by our forefathers.

Chakhesang Women Welfare Society (CWWS), Executive Director Nezelü Nyekha as session speaker on the topic ‘role of women in society today’ said women has a big role to play – family, church, society etc.

Citing successful stories of women’s contribution in the society towards development, Nyekha said ‘we have done so much and we have many things to still go forward and achieve.’

Women blessed with charisma, skills, multi tasking, nurturer, caretaker, problem solver, decision maker, peace maker, and so on, she noted where women were the mediators, peace makers during conflicts, passed down the indigenous knowledge of seeds, seasons, be it textiles and traditions.

As such, she asserted that if a woman is empowered and work for the village development, the village will be at another level. Although there are many good women leaders coming up, Nyekha said support is required for women leadership in all spheres noting women still lacks behind in active participating in the village development programmes.

The programme also witnessed indigenous folk tune competition wherein Thenyizu village, Rihuba, North Kikruma and Phusachodu won first, second and third prize respectively.  

Twelve women associations from 12 villages under CAMA participated in today’s general session.
