Moatsü festival calls for revival & retrospection

Organised by the Ao Senden, Mokokchung, the celebration of Moatsü, the premier festival of the Ao Naga community commenced at Imkongmeren Sports Complex on May 1. The day-one was graced by MLA Nuklutoshi as the guest of honour.

Addressing the audience, Nuklutoshi said that the festival should be a time of revival and retrospection. “We are losing many of our traditional practices and culture including indigenous cultivation which is leading to migration of people to other places for economic viability,” he added which ‘is leading to a decrease in the population in the district.’

On the Naga political solution, the MLA observed that “we have forgotten the political solution during elections” which he said “is confusing the Government of India.” He added that “sovereignty is our right but as a part of the India Union we should settle the political issue in mutual understanding with the central government.”

Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung, Sashank Pratap Singh, IAS brought Moatsü greetings. 

The celebration also witnessed tug of war, pole climbing and bamboo stilt walking competition between the 18 wards of Mokokchung. The winners of the Pole climbing were Alempang and Kumlong ward in first and second place respectively, while Alempang and Yimyu were adjourned first and second place winners in the bamboo stilt walking competitions.

The semi-final and final matches of both men and women will be played on May 2. The day-two of the Moatsü celebration will also witness cultural dance competition between the six ranges of Mokokchung district and it will be graced by the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio.
