Nagalaand sees upward trend in TB patients’ notification

The State of Nagaland experienced an upward trend in Tuberculosis patients being notified in the private sector during the last 5 years. The trend rose from 10% in 2017 to 20% in 2021. 

This data, according to Nikshay data was presented by the State Private-Public Mix, Coordinator Temjenochetla Ao during a “Sensitisation of Elimination Efforts and Update on TB and the NTEP – for Private Practitioners of Kohima District” held today at Hotel Japfü, Kohima.

In 2017, 275 cases were notified from the private sector, which increased to 471 in 2018. 

From 2019-2021, the number were 686, 689 and 741 respectively.  The highest success rate was recorded in 2020. 

The upward trend was also experienced nationally which went from 13% in 2015 to 32% in 2021. 

Temjenochetla, meanwhile, said that the ways to support TB patients outside public sector and ensure standards for care were to get all TB patients notified to give quality care; provide linkages for free and quality diagnosis and drugs; and to reduce out-of-pocket expenditure. 

To better coordinate with private sectors for notification of TB patients especially for drug resistance diagnosis, the coordinator also mentioned that private sector should refer patients to public facilities to ensure test samples are collected for various drug resistance. 

The latest Guidelines on Drug Resistant TB was presented by Dr Palash Talukdar, WHO medical consultant at the event, while Dr Collins Z Sono shared on “Drug Sensitive TB and the End TB Tragedy.”

Earlier, a response from the Practitioners was given by Dr Kejavisa Savino, Oking Hospital, Kohima. Dr  Chiben Kithan District TB Officer, Kohima chaired the programme while Vilekho Bio, Finance Consultant, NTEP delivered the vote of thanks.
