Nagaland Election 2023: NDPP to contest 40 seats

Dimapur, February 3 (MExN): The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) today declared 40 candidates to contest in the upcoming Nagaland Assembly Elections. 

The NDPP, which has a 40 (NDPP): 20 (BJP) seat sharing deal with alliance partners BJP, declared the names of the 40 “official” candidates for the polls. The list was declared in a tweet from the party’s official Twitter handle. 

The party featured 7 new faces into electoral politics, which included Hekani Jakhalu, Salhoutuonuo Kruse, Imkongmar, Temjenmenba, W Chingang Konyak, K Odibendang Chang and Khalenmew Yimchunger.

Meanwhile, 8 out of the 21 NPF legislators who had joined the NDPP in 2022 were among the list of candidates for the 2023 polls. They included Moatoshi Longkumer, TR Zeliang, Vikheho Swu, KG Kenye (former Rajya Sabha MP), CL John, Eshak Konyak, EE Pangteang, and BS Nganlang Phom. Former NPF candidate S Heno Khiamniungan was also listed. 

3 NDPP MLAs resign 
Following the news of the candidate list for the NDPP, 3 of its MLAs who did not make it to the lsit tendered their resignation from the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) on February 2. They were Er Picto Shohe (NDPP) from 32 Atoizu A/C, Amenba Yaden (NDPP) from 21 Tuli A/C, and L Khumo (NDPP) from 57 Thonoknyu A/C.

A notice from the NLA Secretariat informed that the NLA Speaker has accepted the resignations tendered by the three legislators with effect from the forenoon of February 2. Consequent upon their resignation, the NLA Speaker declared the seats of the three aforesaid Assembly Constituencies vacant.
