Nagaland University Kohima Campus, Meriema, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof GT Thong today lamented that Nagaland is grossly underdeveloped due to extreme corruption and inefficiency. The manipulative system, where nepotism and sale of jobs is the order of the day, mostly does not recognize merit, he said while addressing the 19th Parting Social programme of Nagaland University Students’ Union (NUSU) Kohima Campus-Meriema at RECMPA, Jotsoma on June 2.

“Numerous government schemes exist to help you start your own business, but the corrupt have pocketed everything for their kith and kin,” he said and told the students to “fight for what is yours.”

“Some of you will have to fight the corrupt system to safeguard your future, by getting rid of the nepotism and manipulation. To be effective, you have to unite with other like-minded people and organizations,” Prof Thong said.

Jobs exist everywhere

He said that job avenues in the government sector has almost saturated, citing thousands compete for a few vacancies.
In this, he said, jobs in the private sector and entrepreneurship are other options.

Jobs exist everywhere, but opportunities come only to the challenge-takers, he said.

He also asked the students to think of jobs with multi-national companies, the various State and Central Civil Services, etc.

The Combined Armed Police Forces (AR, BSF, CISF, RPF, CRPF, ITBF, NSG, and SSB) is a very good option, he said.

“We come from different economic and social backgrounds, but does it really matter?,” Prof. Thong said and asserted that “Nothing should deter any of you from climbing to the top.”

He maintained that success comes to those who are diligent.

He cited that the great inventor, Thomas Alva Edison, had very little formal education, but was very studious. Adolf Hitler, a weak student in school, was also an ordinary soldier. After the 1st world war however, he soon headed the Nazi party and later became the absolute ruler of Germany.

‘World today is highly competitive’

Prof. Thong said that the world today is highly competitive. “To achieve success you have to be assiduous,” he said and cited Alexander the Great was crowned king at the tender age of 20.

“This great general was tutored by the legendary philosopher, Aristotle. Before 30, he conquered an empire stretching from Greece to India. His idea of a universal realm paved the way for the Roman Empire and Christianity. How did he manage this? Good education and position, of course, helped to some extent, but it was mainly diligence,” he said.

He said that Barack Obama, the then president of the US and the most powerful man on earth that time, was born in one of the world’s poorest nations, Indonesia.

“Grit and determination took him to such great heights,” he said.

‘Only hard work can polish you’

Prof. Thong said that success in life will always remain humankind’s most important goal, “but for which you have to really struggle.”

“Only hard work can polish you, and help you make it through. You will often find obstacles blocking your path, but if you can come out of your comfort zone, these obstacles will only make you stronger,” he said

He said that sweetest success comes after great challenges.

As life becomes more challenging, some people thrive, he said adding that “Going through tough times is not easy, but through the blood, sweat, and tears, you will surely rise higher than where you started.”

He told the students to sacrifice time and energy to achieve their goals.

“If you can bear the pain, rest assured of a good life ahead,” he said. He told the students to pick up other skills apart from pursuing degrees.

Knowledge is Power!

He told the students to work – hard, unceasingly, and persistently and always remember that “Knowledge is Power!”

Hard work and knowledge will surely help you carve a niche for yourself in this world, he said.

“All of you will not be placed in top positions nor is it possible for most of you to become successful in business. But you can definitely become self-sufficient to live a decent life,” he said.

Earlier, NUSU- Kohima Campus president Chingshau Buchem delivered presidential address.

Shahchoi B. Buchem spoke on behalf of the outgoing students.

The programme was chaired by Vinotoli Sumi while vote of thanks was proposed by NUSU- Kohima Campus Social & Cultural, Secretary P Lopyoni Ngullie.
