UNIQLO hires two graduates from Nagaland

Kohima, May 3 (MExN): A two-day visit by senior officials of UNIQLO India to Nagaland has resulted in the recruitment of two Naga graduates under the company’s management candidate programme, marking a significant outcome of the State Government’s ongoing engagement with Japan.

According to an official release, the development follows the traction and visibility created after the ‘Nagaland–Japan Connect’ event held on January 27, an initiative of the Government of Nagaland aimed at strengthening collaborations and engagements between Nagaland and Japan.

As part of this engagement, Kenji Inoue, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Chief Financial Officer, and Board Director of UNIQLO India, visited Nagaland from April 22 to 23 to explore the State’s human resource potential in line with the company’s expansion plans in India.

During his visit, Inoue met with Hekani Jakhalu, Advisor for Industries and Commerce, and Abu Metha, Chairman of the Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN).

He also interacted with senior university officials and conducted seminars with students from management and commerce streams, including MBA, BBA, and MCom programmes.

The release stated that Inoue expressed confidence in the quality of Nagaland’s workforce and indicated that UNIQLO India is keen to recruit candidates from the State for its UNIQLO Management Candidate (UMC) and Retail Associate positions.

In the pilot phase, candidates were shortlisted with support from faculty members of Nagaland University, ICFAI University Nagaland, St. Joseph University, and North East Christian University (NECU).

Following interviews conducted by Inoue in accordance with the company’s global hiring standards, two candidates, Shongmeth Konyak (ICFAI) and Tolivi Shohe (SJU) were selected for permanent roles.

Both candidates have reportedly been offered an annual salary package of ₹10 lakh, along with long-term career progression opportunities within the company and they will now compete with the best talents not only in India but also represent Nagaland in the global job market, the release said.

The release further stated that the initiative forms part of broader efforts by IDAN to strengthen bilateral ties through Track 1, 1.5, and 3 diplomacy, while positioning Nagaland as a source of skilled human resources for international markets.

It also highlighted the role of the Centre of Excellence for Foreign Languages (CoEFL), established as a collaborative project to provide foreign language training and prepare local youth for global employment opportunities. According to the release, more than 190 candidates trained under CoEFL have so far secured placements overseas.

The quality of our human resources is being recognised widely especially by Japan, and the UNIQLO India collaboration with Nagaland is projected to open other opportunities of engagement within the country, it added.
