Nagaland medical college to start from academic year 2023-24: MoHFW

New Delhi, July 30 (MExN): The National Medical Commission has granted permission to the Government Medical College in Kohima to start MBBS from the academic year 2023-24, the Lok Sabha was informed on Friday. 

 

 

 

The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) will have annual intake of 100 seats, stated the Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family (MohFW), Welfare, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar in written reply to a query by  Tokheho Yepthomi, the Nagaland lone Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. 

The medical college is part of a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for ‘Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals’ with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no existing Government or private medical college, the MoS said. 

The fund sharing between the Centre and State Governments in the ratio of 90:10 for North Eastern and Special Category States and 60:40 for others. 

Under the Scheme, 157 Government medical colleges have been approved, including 02 medical colleges in Nagaland at Kohima and Mon, Dr Pawar informed. 

As per guidelines of the scheme, the planning, execution and commissioning of the project is to be done by the State Government, he added. 

Government Medical College at Kohima, christened as the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NMISR), was approved under Phase-I of the Scheme at a total approved cost of Rs. 189 Cr and the entire central share amounting to Rs. 170.10 Cr has already been released to the State Government.

In May, Nagaland HFW Minister P Paiwang Konyak has announced that out of 100 seats, 85% will be reserved for students from the State of Nagaland and 15% seats for All-India quota.
