Nagaland organisations demand justice for victims of March 22 incident

Candlelight vigil held in Dimapur

Organized by the Zeliang Students’ Union Dimapur (ZSUD), a candlelight vigil was held at Super Market, Dimapur on March 26 in memory of the three persons who were killed by unidentified armed miscreants at Lamhainamdi, Peren on March 22.

All speakers at the programme were unanimous in condemning the killing and demanded justice for the victims from the state government.

A representative of Zeliang People’s Organization Dimapur said the organization was against escalating the incident into a tribal issue as they were peace loving citizens who regard all human beings as equals. Appealing all to stop killing and to maintain peace and harmony, the leader also appealed the law enforcing agencies to ensure that no stone is left unturned to award befitting punishment to the perpetrators of the crime at the earliest. He said the government would be held responsible for any untoward incident in the event of failure to deliver justice.

A leader of the ZSUD said the killing had pained the Zeliang community all over the world and urged all right thinking citizens to stand against such “gun culture and anti-social elements creating chaos when everyone is craving for peace.”

Meanwhile, a member of the Zeliang Women Organization Dimapur said the March 22 incident was a crime not only against individuals or a community but against humanity. She appealed the state government to uphold the rights of the departed souls by ensuring justice.

Dimapur Naga Students’ Union, President said the incident was “purely an act of ill motive and a crime against entire Nagas, human race and God.”

Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union leader said the Union was against the idea of “an eye for an eye” but strongly demands justice for the victims.

A representative of the Tenyimia Students’ Union Dimapur said the Union stood in solidarity with the bereaved families and added that it would not remain silent on the issue.

A former President of Western Chakhesang Hoho said that the people should fight for justice and called for a united front in achieving that particular goal.

On behalf of the bereaved families, Isamteing Haining thanked all those who supported the family and are fighting for justice. He said the three persons were killed by armed miscreants and questioned if Nagas should continue to allow “terrorists to live in our land.”

After the programme, all the participants lit a candle each in memory of the departed souls.
