Nagaland: Rainfall brings relief from persistent heat in Dimapur, adjoining areas

A light shower on Wednesday evening, as well as a cloudy sky during the day, brought much-needed relief from the persistent heat of the past few days in Dimapur city, while adjoining Chümoukedima and other hill districts received more rainfall.

In Dimapur, the maximum temperature had been hovering between 37-39 degrees Celsius over the past few days, accompanied by high relative humidity.

According to the Private weather forecasting agency Skymet Weather, the maximum temperature in Dimapur on June 7 was 37 Degrees Celsius, but by 8 PM, it had dropped to 33°C. With the likelihood of more rain in the coming days, the maximum temperatures are expected to fall to 35°C from June 8-10 and further decline thereafter.

Meanwhile, in Kohima, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature decreased from 28.4°C on June 6 to 27 °C on June 7. The maximum temperature on June 5 was 31.8 °C in Kohima.

The IMD’s weather forecast bulletin, issued at 8 PM on June 7, meanwhile, informed that stated rainfall or thundershowers were observed at many places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM on Wednesday.

At the same time, Nagaland was also among the states where the maximum temperature was significantly above normal (3.1-5.1°C) during the same period, the bulletin said.

The IMD further informed that a cyclonic circulation over the east-central Bay of Bengal off the Myanmar coast, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, persists and “light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning is very likely over the region during the next 5 days.”

Specifically on June 8, it forecasted thunderstorms with lightning at isolated places in all the Northeast states, including Nagaland. Similar weather conditions are expected to continue until June 11, according to the bulletin.

Meanwhile, the IMD’s Regional Centre Guwahati also updated that Zunheboto (KVK AWS) recorded the highest rainfall for Nagaland at 2 centimetre on Wednesday.

“The conditions are becoming favourable for the commencement of Southwest monsoon over some parts of the northeastern region during the next 48 hours,” the centre informed.
