Nagaland: Students challenged not to lose identity and history

Nagaland Power & Parliamentary Affairs Minister KG Kenye today challenged the students “not to lose our identity, ourselves and not to forget our history.” Addressing the inaugural session of the 77th general conference of the Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) at Losami village, Kenye said, “As Nagas, everywhere we go, our culture is very important.” 

While preserving and promoting the fineries, ornaments, folk songs, folk dances, folk tales, dresses, he also urged the students not to forget the good qualities, habits, characters and nature. “But the other important side is our virtue, we have forgetting,” he said.

He informed that the scholars, historians and anthropologist studied and jotted down with beautiful passages about the Nagas and the history. “All the best attribution to any human kind have been written in favour of us,” he said adding that they have attributed the Nagas as brave, hardworking, organized people and such a sense of pure democracy.

Let us try to balance and live a life properly; Kenye said and also urged the students to have better approach in their thoughts and life. “Let us have self restraint. Don’t go overboard. Do Not become too emotional,” he said.

Stressing on the need to revisit taboo as practiced by forefathers, he said that in the past we use to obey it and lamented that “Today, we have no more shame. We have no more fear.” We must re-cultivate the good qualities, personalities and virtues, he said,

Also stressing on the need have sympathy and acknowledgement for each other, he urged called upon the people to become a very good and responsible international citizen of the world.

‘Negativity will never lead us to success’
Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) President Vezuhü Keyho challenged the students to broad minded and be more positive. “Negativity will never lead us to success,” he said.

He also called upon the students to be an ambassador of change and bring change for good and better society. Also challenging the students to compete with the best of the best, he also called upon them to be positive, adding that their attitude will determine their altitude.

North East Students Organization (NESO) Secretary General Mutsikhoyo Yhobu urged the CSU to stand together with s strong unity for a vibrant and welfare community. “As long as we stand together with strong unity, no forces on this earth can destroy us,” he said. Yhobu said that divisions within Nagas have become one of the most and the biggest threat in the society, which he said was resulted because of the generation gap differences, our thinking, understanding, outlook and lifestyle.

‘Take active participation in social activism’
Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) President Medovi Rhi said that CSU has continued to remain one of the strongest federating units of NSF. “It has stood firm and uncompromising when it comes to students’ and our people’s welfare, abiding to our motto “Let the welfare of the people be the final law,” he said. Rhi maintained that unity has been the driving force that guided our people and it should remain to do so.

Through unity, we had come this far and had witness exceptional leaders and personalities who had led the Naga people in the principle of “unity in diversity,” he said. “The younger generation should never forsake the touch of oneness as Chakhesang and in greater picture as Nagas. Nagas though divided between four states and two nation, we must remain to be united through our struggle for self determination, our unique history, culture, tradition, costumes, music and folklores,” he added.

As the world progresses at an unprecedented pace, today, we as a dignified people, as Chakhesang and as Nagas, we cannot afford to limit ourselves within the narrow confines of our boundaries and mindset. We must adapt, evolve and consistently push ourselves beyond the limitations if we wish to progress in tune with the rest of the world, he said.

Further, the NSF president appealed the youths who are idly staying away at home to come out from the comfort of their homes and social media and take active participation in social activism, experience the reality in its true self, get involved in community welfare activities, take up entrepreneurship, and farming activities for self sustenance.

The programme was chaired by CSU Tribunal General Vevotso Medeo while CSU president Avezo Kevin Kapu delivered presidential address. COC convenor Ciisayi Lohe delivered welcome address. Earlier, Act of blessing during unveiling of the CSU monolith was pronounced by Rev Z David Koza, executive Secretary CCRCC while Rev Dr Chekrovei Cho-o, Executive Secretary CBCC invoked God’s blessings.
