New college in Nagaland vows to make students ‘Think Bright’ outside the box

CM Rio inaugurates Norman Putsure College

With its motto, ‘Think Bright,’ a new college in Nagaland was inaugurated on June 29 promising to offer the ‘best of western style of education’ but rooted to traditional Naga values.

The Norman Putsure College (NPC) was officially inaugurated by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio by unveiling the foundation stone here today at Ward 10, Chümoukedima.

The college was established in memory of Late Norman Putsure, IAS, by his wife and children to ‘uphold his dream of educating the youth.’ He passed away in 2012 while serving as the Commissioner & Secretary for Social Welfare, Government of Nagaland and team leader of the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA).

Speaking on the occasion, the NPC Chairperson, Aseiu Putsure said that anything good in life takes time to fulfil and it took around 4-5 years for the college to take shape.

The only son of Late Putsure and a software engineer and real estate developer based in Pennsylvania, United States of America, he expressed hope that ‘with God, hard work and thinking bright,’ something good would happen with the opening of the college.

Aseiu’s sister and Vice-Chairperson, NPC, Seyievinuo Putsure also highlighted how her father’s love for the Nagas was instilled among his three children. The CEO of Seyie Design, thus, implied that the establishment of the college was a way of contributing to the society and it was a privilege.

In her introduction of the college, the Managing Director of NPC, Saneinuo Putsure said that the college was started to keep her father’s value for education alive. She also recalled how her father always emphasised on finding talent first and contributing to the world, adding: That is what the NPC is all about.

We believe that every student has the opportunity to excel but the first step is to find what we are good at, the educator noted, adding: “With proper guidance, anyone can find careers that aligned with their gifts making work fun and enjoyable.”

The college motto, ‘Think Bright’ is aimed at directing the student to choose the right path and being in the light, an essence of the society not liabilities, she added, while its teaching gravitates towards making students becoming problem solvers through critical and creative thinking.

The usage of yellow as the theme for NPC in the college uniform as well as building and others is to remind the students to always think bright and chose the light, she added.

She also recalled how in 2015, she was a clueless college graduate but knew that her talent lies in education. While sharing this with her late mother, she said that the latter excitedly suggested starting an educational institution. “Since then, our family has been discussing about the project and first laid the foundation in December 2017, and have not look back ever since,” she added.

As per the NPC, the college’s mission is to “create a place of learning where students can freely discover, express and apply their talents” and students would be “trained to discover their God-given talent(s), develop their skills, and think outside the box.”

In his speech, Chief Minister Rio said that it was an institution befitting the “memory of a person as dear as Late Norman.”

He was a man of vision. As a bureaucrat, wherever his assignment has been, he had always worked on a mission mode. Any assignment given to him, be it official or in a personal capacity, his approach was always to see the challenges positively, Rio recalled.

On a personal note, Rio stated that he was a childhood friend of late Norman and studied in the same college in Darjeeling, and the latter was his best man on his wedding day.

“Later I entered politics while he was inducted in the Government service and we continued to serve our people in different capacities,” he added.

Rio appreciated the effort of his wife late Akruzo, children and family members for establishing this college in his memory “enabling us to celebrate the life of Late Norman.”

“Although he left us too early, his good deeds and legacy will continue to live with us,” he added.

Any institution or movement has to be based on sound principles and clear guidelines. And I am aware that this has been the approach of the NPC, he further noted.

Rio also encouraged the students make the best use facilities provided in within the corridors of an institution striving to give the best modern education rooted in traditional values.

He also asked the teaching faculty to inspire students to walk out of this college “inspired” to face tomorrow for a bright future.

At present, the NPC offers Bachelor’s degree course in Arts for both honours and general students.
