Rio, Sarma hold ‘political meeting’

Correspondent KOHIMA, AUG 28 (NPN) : After the signing of an agreement between PDA constituents– NDPP, BJP and Independents with opposition NPF– for an all-party government (‘Nagaland United Government’) political developments seem headed towards a crisis.

On Friday, the NPF Legislature Party (NPFLP) held an emergency meeting at the residence of its leader T.R. Zeliang in Dimapur which came close on the heels of the statement issued by senior state BJP workers against the formation of the ‘Nagaland United Government’ comprising of all legislators of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

The NPFLP reaffirmed the resolution signed by the legislature party leaders of NDPP, BJP, NPF and two Independents for the ‘Nagaland United Government’ in order to work together to achieve the common goal for early solution to the Naga political issue.

The NPF legislature and party functionaries will also hold a joint consultative meeting on Saturday over the issue. Earlier on August 25, the NPF party president clarified that such matters were within the parameters of the MLAs and the party organisation has nothing to do with it.

For the NDPP, the matter also involves the BJP central leadership who have apparently taken a cautious approach against it. It was also learnt that the NDPP legislature and party functionaries were also likely to meet to discuss the latest development where the BJP central leaders have not welcomed the declaration for the proposed Nagaland United Government with NPF.

Source told Nagaland Post, that the NDPP leadership will have to choose whether to follow the compulsions of the pressures at home or the dictates of pulls of New Delhi.

Sources speculated that NDPP as of present, is committed to the formation of the Nagaland United Government .

However, this will be clear only after chief minister Neiphiu Rio along with BJP deputy CM Y. Patton and state BJP president and minister Temjen Imna Along again meet with BJP Central leaders to take a final call on the matter.

What has now come out in the open, is the statement of senior BJP workers published in the August 26 issue of this newspaper. The BJP signatories reiterated that they are opposed to the idea of an all-party government and will only abide by the decision of the BJP high command.

They also echoed the views of several state BJP leaders that since an all-party forum called Core Committee on Naga Political Issue was in place, there was no need for an all-party government for the same issue.

They BJP signatories also termed the effort as using the Naga political issue as an excuse by some political party to come to power through the backdoor.

Rio meets Himanta

Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio and Assam chief minister and North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday held a “political meeting” in Guwahati and also discussed “various party affairs of the pre-poll alliance partners”.

Informing this in a tweet, Rio said he and Sarma “had a political level meeting”.

The meeting comes days after Rio, deputy chief minister & BLP leader Y. Patton and state BJP president and minister Temjen Imna Along were summoned to Delhi by union Home minister Amit Shah on August 19 in connection with the proposed move to form an all-party government under the nomenclature– Nagaland United Government.

Rio, who was accompanied by agriculture & cooperation minister G. Katio Aye of the NDPP and BJP leaders– PHE minister Jacob Zhimomi and advisor prison, printing & stationery H. Haiying, also discussed on various party affairs of the pre-poll alliance partners with Sarma.
