After the Naga People’s Front (NPF) and the Rising People’s Party (RPP) recently came out against the implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the National People’s Party (NPP) has also made their stance clear in opposition to the proposed law.

According to its National general secretary, James K Sangma, the party has already made several statements in the past, in opposition to the implementation of UCC, including from its National president and MPs. “So our stance is clear that we are not for UCC,” he said.

This was stated in a press conference, held after the handing & taking over ceremony of the post of State President at Hotel Saramati Dimapur on June 28.

The National general secretary further mentioned that the state unit of the party would also convene a meeting in the days to come, to discuss on this particular issue. Several Naga civil society organisations (CSOs) have categorically stated that UCC would undermine the customary laws and practices of the people enshrined in Article 371 A.

Although not in coalition with the ruling state government headed by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Sangma stressed that the NPP will continue support the government as well. “We do not necessarily have to be in the opposition to voice out concerns and bring out issues. It is the duty of any elected representative to be the voice of the people,” he said.

In regard to the ongoing crisis in Manipur, the party had also expressed its concern about the violence and breakdown of law and order in that state. Sangma asserted that several of its members including its Manipur state MLA had met the Home Minister, Amit Shah. “We hope that peace and normalcy return after taking all stakeholders into consideration.”

Andrew Ahoto takes charge as NPP National general secretary
Meanwhile the party announced that Dr Andrew Ahoto Sema, has taken charge as its National General Secretary of frontal organisations while Nyamnyei Konyak was given the post of State President which was vacated by Sema.

Sangma noted that, NPP though a fairly new party have made many progressive strives in terms of organisational and electoral growth. He thus thanked the people of Nagaland for giving them the mandate by electing 5 MLAs from the party.
