NSCN (IM) says SC Jamir is no authority on Naga issue

NSCN (IM) Collective Leadership member Rh Raising rejected former Nagaland Chief Minister Dr SC Jamir’s recent remarks on the Naga political issue following Jamir’s meeting with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.

Speaking to reporters, Raising stated that Jamir does not represent the Naga cause. “He is not the advocate of the Naga people. We know that from the very beginning,” Raising said. He added, “He (Jamir) is out and out Indian, and he speaks Indian polity… he doesn’t have any right to talk on the issue of the Naga.”

Raising was interviewed on September 16 at the Nagaland Police Complex in Chümoukedima, following a meeting between the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and the NSCN (IM).

The PAC was led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Deputy Chief Ministers Y Patton and TR Zeliang.

Raising declined to comment on what transpired in the meeting, describing it merely as a consultation with no points to announce.
When asked about the timeline for concluding the Naga political solution, Raising stated that progress rests entirely with the Government of India. “It depends on India, not on us. The ball is in their court,” he said.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said the meeting discussed matters related to the protracted Indo-Naga political talks. Without providing context, he said the constitution of an “apex Committee for discussion is in negotiation,” following which dialogue will resume. Rio did not specify the committee’s make-up and declined to react to Jamir’s comments.

The PAC meeting with the NSCN (IM) was followed by a seating of the state Cabinet. MLA Achumbemo Kikon, under whose constituency falls a large chunk of the Disputed Area Belt (DAB) with Assam, also attended the PAC meeting. According to him, oil exploration in the DAB was examined during the meeting, but nothing was said to be “concretised.” As it concerns Article 371 (A), Kikon said that protecting land and resources remains the priority while the government works toward a policy framework.

Regarding a recent incident in the DAB, Kikon said the state government is working to strengthen ties to ensure peaceful coexistence between the two neighbouring states. He added that communication is being maintained at both public and official levels while details of the incident await confirmation.
