Over 1.35 lakh cops contracted COVID in India: DGP

Correspondent KOHIMA, OCT 21 (NPN) : Nagaland Director General of Police (DGP), T John Longkumer, Wednesday disclosed that over 1.35 lakh policemen across the country have tested positive for COVID-19 and 802 have succumbed to virus.

Speaking at the Police Commemoration Day programme held at New Police Reserve, Tennis Court, Phesama here, DGP T John Longkumer said police personnel plays a crucial role in the development of a nation.



He said they do this by maintaining law and order, foiling the nefarious ploys of insurgents and anti-socials and helping the needy and ensuring smooth flow of essential services to the people.

DGP stated that 265 policemen across the nation laid down their life while maintaining law and order, preventing anti-socials and countering terrorists this year. “We pay our respects to these brave and valiant Police personnel who sacrificed their valuable lives to protect the integrity and security of the country,” Longkumer said.

Further, DGP stated that more 35,000 policemen have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty since 1947. He paid tribute to the Nagaland police officers and men who also made such supreme sacrifices. DGP informed that the Nagaland police have lost many precious lives both in the state and also in states like Chhattisgarh and West Bengal.

“The courage and sacrifice of these martyrs will always be remembered by the department and also by those they died protecting,” said Longkumer.



However, DGP said “Today is not only a day of mourning but a day when we remember the spirit of selfless sacrifice shown by the martyrs and renew our pledge to serve our people, to secure and maintain the integrity of our nation.”

On the occasion, several police officers laid the wreath at the memorial erected and paid respect to the police personnel who had sacrificed their lives for the safety of the country.

Police Commemoration Day is observed on October 21 every year in memory of the ten police personnel who were martyred in an ambush by heavily armed Chinese troops in Hot Springs in Ladakh on October 21, 1959.
