Remarking that the world today has changed profoundly, Dr SC Jamir mentioned in particular, the internet revolution and introduction of smart phones as key factors which had led to this change.  He noted the current generation of youths were significantly more progressive, dynamic and smarter than the older generation. Yet, the quality of education in Nagaland with over reliance on passive learning has not been abreast with these changes, he noted.

Jamir was speaking as the chief guest for the 37th freshers’ day of Public College of Commerce (PCC), Dimapur at IMC Hall, Dimapur on September 30.

“Human resource is available in Nagaland so why should we be stagnant in our approach?” he paused while adding this problem is not exceptional to the state alone, as most universities in India face a similar situation. As such, he stated that it is the responsibility of teachers to play a greater role in imparting new forms of learning methods to the students. The new guidelines and directives of UGC needed to be followed as well. Mediocre way of teaching should be disregarded and instead imparting superior form of teaching ought to be the standard.

“It has become imperative to have quality faculty who will bring transformation in students and lead them to acquire the right knowledge,” Jamir said.

Delving into the political background of Nagaland, Jamir noted the younger generation of Nagas today have to choose between a united, strong Nagaland or a divided state with no voice in the country.

He said that Nagaland was the first state to be created not on the basis of language but through political negotiation. It came into being because of the blood tears and sacrifices of people in the past, he declared. “Therefore, we have to be careful in nurturing the state,” he added.

He urged upon the youths to contribute their efforts in building a new Nagaland. “You much always strive to achieve excellence, positive attitude and positive action.”

During the programme, Dr AK Talukder, Principal, PCC, shared on the brief origins of the college which was formed in the year 1980. “At that time, only Dimapur Government College had a Commerce department so this was the second college to provide commerce education,” he said.

PCC has been recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The college will also soon introduce Arts stream on the grounds of the choice-based credit system.
