Quality education foremost priority: Sukhato

51st Biennial General Conference of All Sumi Students Union underway 

ZUNHEBOTO, JANUARY 25 (MExN): The second day inaugural session of 51st Biennial General Conference of All Sumi Students Union (SKK) was graced by Dr Sukhato A Sema, MLA as the special guest on January 23 at Multi Purpose hall, Zunheboto Town.

Addressing the students’ community, Sukhato said this was a time for the SKK to retrospect for the progressive growth of the society and compete with the rest in term of education, economy, employment and development sector, a press release received from the media cell stated. 

Pointing out that Sumi community has been lagging behind in every aspect; Sukhato appealed the students’ community to lead its community forward.

Highlighting that quality education is the foremost priority in any given society; he also appealed the students’ community to put in more efforts in competitive exams because without hard work no one will attain a quality life.

Sukhato further urged the people to do away with the proxy teachers and focus on quality education in Zunheboto district. He said that there are many projects in the pipeline and therefore appealed every citizen to cooperate with the government and public leaders.

The MLA also unveiled the 51-U biennial General Conference of SKK monolith. Rev Dr Daniel Chishi, Executive Secretary SBAK (Aizuto) pronounced the dedication of the memorial stone. 

In the evening session, K Khekiye Sema, IAS (Retd) graced the occasion as guest speaker.

In his address, Khekiye emphasized that regardless of one’s background, making a positive impact is achievable by maintaining an open-minded perspective. This involves discerning between right and wrong and having the courage to reject what is detrimental, he said.

Khekiye also urged the gathering to uphold the legacy of their forefathers with honesty and integrity. 

Calling for a change in the electoral system, he lamented that in Nagaland, anyone who possess money can be elected because people only worship money politics.

While politicians do buy votes, Khekiye wondered whether people are aware that politicians may not have a choice, given that many are selling their votes.  

He said people often point finger at the politicians that they are all corrupt despite being aware that they are corrupt. He stated that many present ministers, advisors and MLAs obtained loan during the election while they pay a certain interest of loans every month and year.

After post election, he said politicians no more care for any development activities for the people. Considering this state of affairs, Khekiye said that people are equally corrupt as they are the ones creating a corrupted system.

To bring about a transformation, Khekiye underscored on the need of the church and every citizen of the state to take responsibility for bringing reformation in the society.

He also appealed all the Nagas and stakeholders to have a collective voice to bring a Naga political solution.

Earlier, greetings was delivered by Chumben Khuvung, general secretary, Nagaland Students Federation and R  Sunep Pongen, president, Central Naga Students’ Association and Ngukato L Aye, SKK delivered the presidential address followed by Sumi indigenous war dance from Mudutsughomi Cultural troupe and Thighale Yezashi cultural troupe.
