Rio says much needs to be done for all-round development in Nagaland

Correspondent KOHIMA, DEC 2 (NPN) : State chief minister Neiphiu Rio said despite achievements in various fields, a lot still remained to be done and assured that the government was committed to take necessary steps for all-round development of the State and ensure that the people were provided with the best opportunities for growth and progress.

Greeting the people of Nagaland on the occasion of 59th Statehood Day from Civil Secretariat here where a programme was held to mark the occasion on Wednesday, Rio expressed gratitude to all those who played a pioneering role in the creation of Nagaland as the 16th State of the Union of India.

He said it was close to six decades since statehood was achieved and that the quality of life has improved significantly, especially in health, education, road and power sectors, during this period. He called on everyone to work united to take the State forward and provide better standard of living for all citizens.

With Nagaland occupying a unique position in the Indian Union with special provisions (Article 371-A in the Constitution), Rio said that the people of the State continued to earnestly wait for solution to the Naga political issue. He also noted that negotiations between Centre and Naga Political Groups have reached a stage that has given hope for an early resolution. Rio claimed that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) aimed to convey the voice of the people to all stakeholders involved in the negotiations.

The chief minister also launched NIPUN Bharat Mission in Nagaland, besides inaugurating photography exhibition on “Glimpses of the history of the State” on the occasion.

A march past was presented by DEF Kohima, 4th NAP Bn, STF, 9th IRBn, 13th IRBn, 15th IR Mahila Bn NPTS Brass Band and 15th IR Mahila pipe band.

NAPTC deputy commandant Dr Kupe Kapfo was the parade commander and 15th NAP (IR) Bn assistant commandant Medemkala was second-in-command.

A musical presentation “The Gael” was presented by NPTS brass band and 15th NAP (IR) Mahila pipe band.

Song and dance display “Suno gaur se duniya walo” was presented by TaFMA, while Aong Reju cultural troupe Kohima (Ao), Pfushon Thuzi cultural troupe (Rengma) and Khiamniungan cultural troupe Kohima gave cultural presentations.

IAF’s aerobatic display: Meanwhile, in a surprise move, a pair of BAE Hawk Mk132 of Indian Air Force’s Suryakiran aerobatic team appeared in the sky over the State Capital leaving behind smoke trails as they flew to mark the 59th Statehood Day celebrations and inauguration of the 22nd Hornbill Festival.
