Correspondent KOHIMA, FEB 3 (NPN): State chief minister Neiphiu Rio officially took charge as chairman of North Eastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC) at a programme held in this regard at his official residence here on Wednesday evening.

Taking to twitter, Rio said he had formally taken over the charge from outgoing chairman James Sangma, who is power minister of Meghalaya. The chairmanship of NERPC is held on a rotational basis for a period of one year by power ministers from among the NE states. Rio’s appointment as chairman of NERPC, under the Power ministry, was made on April 20, 2020. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic, the formal handing and taking over could not take place.

NERPC is the highest forum that coordinates various issues concerning power sector in NE, including generation and transmission utilities. Since all States and utilities are interdependent on each other in respect of power generation, transmission and distribution, it is an important body. It is also responsible for monitoring of energy flow and enforcement of grid discipline.
