The reduction of the taxes on fuel announced by the Nagaland Government on Monday resulted in fall in the price of petrol by over Rs 3 per litre (/L) on February 22, while the impact was negligible for diesel.

The retail price of petrol in state capital Kohima, accordingly, decreased from Rs 93.93/L on February 22 to Rs 90.86 on February 23, denoting a reduction by Rs 3.07/L, as per IndianOil One App.

However, with the tax cut translating to just around 0.57 paisa/L, the impact on diesel was negligible.

The retail price of diesel in Kohima decreased from Rs 84.65/L on February 22 to Rs 84.29 on February 23, a fall by 36 paisa/L.

In Nagaland, Dimapur had the lowest fuel prices with petrol retailing at Rs 89.95 and diesel at Rs 83.56 on February 22. It was highest in Tuensang at Rs 92.85 and Rs 86.12 respectively for petrol on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, according to an IANS news agency report, oil marketing companies (OMCs) increased the price of petrol and diesel by 35 paisa/L on February 23.

Asa result, the petrol and diesel price increased across the country between 32-40 paisa/L depending on the level of local duty at the state level, it said.

Taking this into consideration, the overall impact of Nagaland Government’s reduction of taxes would come to a maximum of Rs 3.47 for petrol and 76 paisa/L for diesel.

According to IANS analysis, the petrol and diesel prices have increased 25 times in 2021 with the two auto fuels increasing by Rs 7.22 and Rs 7.45 per litre, respectively so far this year.

Sources in OMCs said that price rise on Tuesday followed movement in product price in global markets. The crude oil is also on fire with benchmark Brent crude gaining over 2 per cent on Tuesday to reach closer to $67 a barrel now, it added.
