Vehicle registrations in Nagaland witness healthy growth in 2022

Vehicle registrations in Nagaland surged to 25,733 in 2022 and nearly recovered to pre-pandemic level, as according to data from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

The figure was a rise of 17.68% over 2021 and suggestive of things returning to normalcy after two challenging years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As reported earlier, due to the onset of COVID-19 and subsequent lockdowns that halted economic activities, vehicle registrations saw drastic fall in 2020 particularly from the 2nd quarter in April, which continued till July.

Accordingly, it decreased by 44.31% from 29,124 in 2019 to 16,219 in 2020, as per the data available on the VAHAN Dashboard, an online data repository maintained by the MoRTH regarding vehicle registration and other related issues across the country.

With improvement in tackling pandemic challenges, it recovered by 34.82% to 21,866 in 2021 (See table).

In 2022, the trend continued and there were higher registrations.

Apart from the pandemic, data on the VAHAN Dashboard indicated that vehicle registrations in Nagaland, in tune with national trend, saw a declining trend from 2019, when the numbers fell to 29,162 from an all-time high of 33,875 recorded in 2018.

As of January 4, the overall registration of vehicles in Nagaland stood 4,01,939. Across India, registrations of vehicles increased by 15.17% to 2.12 crore in 2022, up from 1.84 crore in 2021.

Registration of heavy vehicles highest
Out of 25,733 registrations in 2022, a total of 24,685 vehicles are shown to be conforming to the latest Bharat Stage VI emission norms, denoting that most cars were new.

In terms of fuel, almost all vehicles registered were either diesel or petrol based, at 12,808 and 12,671 respectively. The other fuel categories were petrol/hybrid (221) and CNG (23), Petrol/CNG (1) while 6 were denoted as ‘not applicable.’

As usual, usage of the Electric BOV (Battery Operated Vehicles) is yet to catch on in Nagaland with just 3 registrations in 2022. Likewise, in 2021, only 2 vehicles were registered under the category.

Category-wise, Heavy Goods Vehicle dominated the registrations at 9,162, followed by Light Motor Vehicle (8,080) and Two-Wheeler (Non-Transport) at 5,685.

In terms of makers, Tata Motors continued its dominance with 5519 registrations in 2022 as well as 540 for the Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd at 4137 was second, followed by Ashok Leyland Ltd (2774), Mahindra & Mahindra Limited (2070) and VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd (1263).

In two/three wheelers segment, Hero Motocorp Ltd (1497) overtook last year’s topper Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (P) LTD (1,438), followed by TVS Motor Company Ltd (1,181). Other notable registration in the segment were India Yamaha Motor Pvt Ltd (734), Bajaj Auto Ltd (679) and Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd (361)

During the same period, in the relatively higher-end category, there were 29 registrations for Isuzu Motors India Pvt Ltd; 18 MG Motor India Pvt Ltd; 3 Jaguar Land Rover, 2 BMW, 3 Mercedes –Benz and 37 Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd. A total of 342 Royal Enfield was also registered in 2022.

In Nagaland, 1 State Transport Authority and 8 regional or District Transports offices— Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung, Mon, Phek, Tuensang, Wokha, and Zunheboto are integrated with the VAHAN dashboard.

As per the Dashboard, the overall registration of vehicles is highest at Kohima RTO (165821), followed by Dimapur DTO (121,341) and Mokokchung RTO (52,290). Incidentally, while the first-two RTO/DTO witnessed significant registration in 2022, it was limited in Mokokchung.
