Wokha citizens demand justice for abused child and family

Wokha citizens, along with various civil society organizations (CSOs) on Thursday gathered at the Wokha Police Station to demand justice for a 9-year-old girl who was allegedly abused by her guardian.

The assembled crowd chanted for justice and insisted on revealing the identity of the accused individual, emphasizing the need for accountability under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). 

The victim’s father expressed deep sorrow, recounting a mutual agreement made in 2021 with the accused, who had promised to provide for his daughter’s education and care for her as her own. However, he revealed that his daughter endured unimaginable torment under the accused guardianship, betraying the trust placed in her.

Citizens expressed that they were deeply disturbed by the visible signs of abuse on the victim’s body, stating that the act was a criminal and heinous acts and also urged for fair and expeditious resolution to the case. 

The victim’s grandmother also shared that her granddaughter bore not only recent injury marks but also scars from past incidents of abuse. 

Additional SP Wokha Soriso K Quinker released a statement regarding the incident of child abuse reported at 3 PM on March 20 at Tsumang ‘A,’ colony which prompted a swift and coordinated response from both the Wokha Police Station and the Women Police Station. 

The accused identified as Rosemary Kikon, aged 39, and residing in Tsumang ‘A’ colony, was promptly apprehended and charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act, the statement read. 

Additionally, the Wokha Women Police Station received an FIR from the victim’s father, leading to the formal registration of a case related to the distressing incident. The Additional SP emphasized the ongoing efforts to thoroughly investigate the case and ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice. 

Acknowledging the vital support from the community, he expressed gratitude for their cooperation in swiftly addressing incidents of child abuse. He also issued a crucial advisory to the public concerning the importance of maintaining law and order within the community.

Orgs condemn 
Meanwhile, the Yanthamo Village Council, Eloe Ekhung Yanthamo, Yanthamo Village Students’ Union, Wokha Town Yanthamo Ekhung strongly condemned the inhumane and heinous act meted upon a minor child.

“We express our utmost anguish on the torture and trauma inflicted on our daughter and demand immediate justice to the victim. It is our request to the concerned authorities to take up the matter urgently in the interest of justice and future deterrence,” the condemnation note read. 

The Nyiro Range Students’ Union (NRSU) termed the act committed upon the child as “barbaric and heinous” and said such ruthless and insane behavior targeting a minor child was totally intolerable. 

The Union has appealed to all the right thinking citizens to condemn the act so that such evil practices will not occur in the future.
