Mon landslide: CM visits site, announces Rs 10 lakh relief

Mon, July 21 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio visited the landslide affected area at Defence Colony, Walo Ward, Mon Town and announced immediate relief measures on July 20.

As pre the DIPR report, Dr Rio, accompanied by his team, visited the landslide-affected site at Defence Colony, Walo Ward, to assess the damage and meet the affected families. Describing the incident as “uncertain and unfortunate,” he conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families.

The CM commended the coordinated efforts of volunteers, civil society organisations, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the District Emergency Force (DEF), and the district administration for their rescue work, and urged them to continue their support.

Highlighting the broader challenge of climate change, the CM said Nagaland, like other regions, was now experiencing its visible impacts. He stressed the need for strict adherence to building by-laws and safety regulations while undertaking construction in vulnerable zones.

As an immediate relief measure, he handed over Rs 10 lakh to the Konyak Union, the apex civil society body, for emergency use, and assured that the government would take necessary steps to address the situation in the longer term.

Mon town remains completely cut off from the rest of the state due to road blockades along key lifelines, including Tizit, Naganimora, Sonari, Wakching and Aboi, an investigation team from the Konyak Union informed the CM during a video presentation on the extent of the damage.

Speaking on behalf of the Konyak Legislative Members, Advisor W Chingang Konyak also expressed sympathy to the affected families.

Deputy Commissioner of Mon, Wennyei Konyak, thanked the CM and his team for their visit, while Konyak Union President Yamao Konyak appreciated the state government’s swift response and support to the affected communities.
