Nagaland Police honours ‘bravehearts’ with memorial

Chümoukedima, March 18 (MExN): A Police Memorial, dedicated to the bravehearts of Nagaland Police who made the sacrifice in the line of duty, was unveiled by State Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma at the NAP Training Centre on March 16.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that Nagaland Police has a glorious history and is one of the police forces in the country bestowed with presidential collars.

He termed it a true recognition of “what we have achieved, what we stand for, and what we have done.”

Sharma, however, emphasised that there is still much to be done and this can still be achieved if all units work together.

Each unit has some form of memorial, celebrated on Police Commemoration Day on October 21, and the unveiling of the Police Memorial at NAPTC is a small effort, he said. The DGP also stressed the need to have a state-level central police memorial for Nagaland Police where all the units can participate together.

These are small occasions that will give an opportunity to come together to show to the people that it’s the khaki and the people that bind us together, that we are not divided in terms of tribes, religion, clans, or villages, he added.

He assured to look into it and work towards choosing an appropriate location and managing some funds.

As per the State DIPR, Sharma also suggested that the police memorial can inscribe the names of the martyrs, or come up with a booklet, pamphlet, or a book about the fallen martyrs of Nagaland police with a brief account of their contributions or the actual accidents in the line of duty.

This would be a befitting tribute, he said.

He also suggested incorporating, during the course of training, case studies on how ambushes are led or how to escape an ambush, adding a personal touch of the names of the people and how they encountered these incidents.

The State Police chief also expressed that Nagaland Police have done very well so far, with basic training being good, but there is a need to do more on adapting to new technology and new methods of crime management.

Accordingly, he urged all jawans and personnel of Nagaland police to take training seriously. In addition, he informed that they will be incorporating a new methods training curriculum from the NC Level up to sub-inspector and inspector level during the training.

Besides this, the parliament of India has passed three criminal laws so everyone in Nagaland Police will have to be trained and re-trained on the new laws as a lot of things are going to change in the process. We have to adopt not just to the laws but also to technology and other things, Sharma said.

He also informed that there is a plan to set up a committee for rewards, with rewards for excellent performing personnel to be given away immediately and not after six months. Commandant, NAPTC,

Ben Longkumer, NPS, in his speech, stated that with the unveiling of this memorial, it’s not only a fitting symbol of sacrifices, contributions, and achievements over the years by Nagaland Police but also a gentle reminder to each one of us to make an important bridge between the past, present, and future.

The Memorial reflects a shared collective faith, giving a soul and meaning to loss, a tribute, dedication, and a positive reminder of the due responsibility of all of us alive and living to the memories of their death, he said. He stated that the memorial is of great significance, not only a respectable and honorable tribute but also a true honor of the bravery and sacrifices of our brave hearts. We must share these stories to keep their legacy and bravery alive, he added.

The ceremony included the laying of a Ceremonial Wreath by DGP Sharma and the display of Shok Shastra Shraddhanjali Drill.
