Naga People’s Front (NPF) on Wednesday issued tickets to 10 candidates for the upcoming Manipur Assembly elections.

A ticket distribution ceremony was held at the NPF Central office in Kohima, attended by NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, NPF legislature party leader TR Zeliang, legislators and senior party members both from Nagaland and Manipur.

According to reports, after the NPF party announced the list of candidates on Monday, tension erupted in some parts of Manipur as supporters of a candidate who was denied the party ticket staged a protest and burnt the party flag.

Senior NPF leader W Morung Makunga of Tengnoupal constituency also tendered his resignation from the primary membership of the party after his name did not feature in the list of 10 candidates.

As per reports, Makunga joined the Congress on Wednesday after he was invited by the party.

Those who received the party ticket include the four sitting legislators– Losü Dikho for 48 Mao A/C, Awangbow Newmai for 52 Tamei A/C, Leishiyo Keishing 43 Phungyar A/C and Khashim Vashum 45 Chingai A/C.

The other intending candidates include– Langhu Paulhring Anal 41 Chandel A/C, Ram Muivah 44 Ukhrul A/C, Khoho Süle Antony 47 Karong A/C, D. Korungthang Maring 42 Tengnoupal A/C, Francis Ngajokpa 49 Tadubi A/C and Khangthuanang Panmei 53 Tamenglong A/C.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu said that NPF had received more applicants this time and that all the aspiring candidates were equally good. Since the party could give only one ticket for a constituency, he said many were disappointed.

Dr. Shürhozelie, however, said that denying party ticket to a person did not mean that the person was not qualified. “The committee took various factors into consideration apart from the integrity, personality or capability of the individual candidates concerned,” he said.

He hoped that those who were denied the tickets would not misunderstand but appreciate the processes that took place which were more or less circumstantial.

Dr. Shürhozelie thanked the ticket committee led by its convenor, Lok Sabha MP (Outer Manipur) Dr Lorho S Pfozhe, members– Vikheho Swu, Awangbo Newmai, Paul Moinao and SP Ngamreiphy for their efforts put in to select the candidates.

In his brief speech, Dr Pfoze said it was tough exercise for the committee to pick 10 candidates out of over 40 applicants they received. He said that the candidates were screened after thorough consultations.

The ceremony was chaired by NPF secretary general Achumbemo Kikon while Chakhesang Baptist Church Minister’s Hill, Kohima, senior pastor Rev. Dr Vevo Phesao invoked God’s blessings. NPF legislator (in-charge of Manipur) Y Vikheho Swu delivered the welcome address.

Short speeches were also delivered by TR Zeliang and Samuel Risom while vote of thanks was delivered by NPF working president Apong Pongener.
