Lhisemia of Kohima village and Pfutseromi village celebrate a century of friendship

The Lhisemia of Kohima village (Angami/Kohima District) and Pfutseromi village (Chakhesang/Phek district) today came together in unison for historic celebration of 100 years friendship between the two at Pfutseromi village in Phek district. The event was marked under the theme ‘Reviving and reaffirming the age old century friendship.’

Both young and old in their traditional fineries joined the celebration through unveiling of centenary monolith, gift exchange, mass traditional procession, traditional songs and dances and centenary feast.

A monolith was erected also today in commemoration of the ‘Friendship Feast’ held in 1922 between Lhisemia of Kohima village and Pfutseromi village, and the people rededicated themselves during this centenary celebration, renewing the friendship that “our grand fathers had foresightedly envisioned and planted.”

A plaque was jointly unveiled by Ayie Yhome, chairperson of Lhisemia Council and Lhiwepelo Ritse, chairperson of Pfutseromi Village Council.

Speaking on the occasion Wepretso Mero, (Rtd) Commissioner & Secretary Nagaland, strongly believed that God had made a plan for both Lhisemia and Pfutseromi villagers to have a good friendship and ties with each other.

Highlighting the history, Mero stated that, Tsosielie and Kruneizhü, both government servants and visionary leaders from Lhisemia clan of Kohima village happened to perform their official duties in 1922 and came to Pfutseromi village and met Theyiekamvü Ngachü GB ( Zhiekemvü Ngachu) who was also a powerful GB.

Theyiekamvü Ngachu had proposed to have inter-village traditional community friendship feast for maintenance of cordial and special friendship.

Their talks and decisions eventually passed to both Lhisemia clan leaders and members and Pfutseromi villagers. Both sides had agreed to their proposal and accordingly carried out an inter village traditional community friendship feast with in 1922 at Pfutseromi village and went to Kohima village in 1925.

Meanwhile, Lhisemia Council chairperson Ayie Yhome stressed on the need to strengthen the bond of friendship for generations to come. He also called upon the gathering to support and help each other while also upholding one another through prayers.

In the name of this historic event, let us forgive each other for any misdeed in the past and reason together to strengthen our friendship, he said.

Pfutseromi Village Council chairperson Lhiwepelo Ritse asserted that the friendship between Lhisemia and Pfutseromi would continue till the heaven and earth exists. He also called for upholding the age old friendship to let peace and better understanding prevail between the two communities.

Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu, former chief minister lauded the efforts of the two communities for standing firm to the age old friendship and coming together once again to take it forward and pass it on to the younger generation.

Maintaining that peace and unity is the need of the hour among the Nagas in general, Dr Liezietsu expressed hope that this friendship would set a new trend for other Naga tribes and villages to follow suit. Naga are progressing in many aspects but the society lacks oneness and understanding, and during such situation the coming together of the two will send a strong message to the Nagas in general to stay united, he said.

Former minister Tseivilie Miachieo, while extending greetings, termed it as a ‘memorable day,’ and said that in spite of facing great hardships in material possession, communication etc, the elders of the two villages yearned for peace and harmony and struggled to reinvigorate the brotherhood of Lhisemia and Pfutseromi in particular and Tenyimia in general.

“Today we are celebrating 100 years of friendship in the midst of many divisions among the Nagas owing to our obsession with wealth and power,” he said while wishing that the celebration though small, would be a step in the restoration of Nagas’ past glory as one people and one nation.

Zekotso Mero, Inspector General of Police also spoke on the occasion and stressed on the need to strengthen the cordial relationship between the two.

The programme was chaired by 100 years celebration Core Committee co-convener Dr Neisatuo Mero while Core Committee member Weprepe Mero led the service for unveiling of the centenary monolith.
