Says, desire of all Nagas for NPF & NDPP to come together

While deliberating on Manipur polls where the NPF is putting up ten candidates, the Working Committee (NPF) on Monday resolved to invite chief minister Neiphiu Rio with all NDPP legislators to join hands together in order to effectively address the issues confronting the people at the present juncture.

This was among the three-point resolution adopted at the NPF Working Committee meeting, held at the NPF central office in Kohima on Monday. The resolution was jointly signed by NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu and secretary general Achumbemo Kikon.

Talking to media persons after the meeting, Achumbemo Kikon said that the Working Committee decided to extend invitation to the chief minister and his legislators to come together, as it was the desire of all Nagas that the two parties– NPF and NDPP “should come together.” Kikon expressed the hope that the chief minister would “apply his best wisdom for the good of all of us.”

Asked whether the invitation meant merger of NPF and NDPP, Kikon refused to be drawn into it but only said: “Politics is the art of the possible. Everything is and can be possible.”

He reiterated that since it was the wish of the Nagas for the two parties to come together, both have to explore the best possible option on how to come together. “The dynamics of politics is changing and everyone has to adapt with the changing time. So, we have a strong opinion that the desire of our people should be respected,” he said.

The Working Committee also declared that the party would be fielding 10 candidates for the upcoming Manipur elections scheduled to be held on two phases- first phase on February 27 and second phase on March 3.

Kikon said that more than 40 candidates had applied for NPF ticket and that after studying the prospects of winning double-digit tickets and after extensive exercise, the party decided to zero down to give tickets to ten aspirants in the Naga dominated areas. Though there are 11 constituencies, Kikon said NPF had left one constituency uncontested as it was not able to find a strong candidate.

Kikon said that the NPF and BJP, which are allies of the coalition government in Manipur, will have friendly contests in several seats. NPF candidates include– Chandel A/C: Langhu Paulhring Anal, Tengnoupal A/C: Dangsawa Korungthang Maring, Phungyar A/C: Leishiyo Keishing, Ukhrul A/C: Ram Muviah, Chingai A/C: Khashim Vashum, Karong A/C: Koho Siile Anthony, Mao A/C: Lasii Dikho, Tadubi A/C: M. Francis Ngajokpa, Tamei A/C: Awangbow Newmai and Tamenglong A/C: Khangthuanang Panmei.
