PM Modi lauds preservation of traditional knowledge in Nagaland

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed the “commendable effort” made to preserve traditions and traditional knowledge in Nagaland and particularly highlighted Lidi Kro-u, an organisation undertaking the work of reviving “beautiful facets of Naga culture.”

In the 95th episode of the monthly radio broadcast ‘Mann Ki Baat’, the Prime Minister said that India is home to the oldest traditions in the world and it was everyone’s responsibility to preserve the traditions and traditional knowledge, to promote it and to take it forward as much as possible.

“One such commendable effort is being made by some friends of our northeastern state of Nagaland. I liked this effort very much, so I thought, I’d share it with the listeners,” he added.

Modi further said that lifestyle of the Naga community, their art-culture and music attracts everyone and it was an important part of the glorious heritage of the country.

“The life of the people of Nagaland and their skills are also very important for a sustainable life style,” and to save these traditions and skills and pass them on to the next generation, Lidi Kro-u was formed, he informed.

“The organisation has undertaken the work of reviving beautiful facets of Naga culture which were on the verge of being lost,” he added.

Among others, PM Modi said that the organisation has started the work of launching three Naga Music albums so far.
“Naga folk music is a very rich genre in itself,” he added.

He also highlighted how Lidi Kro-u also organises workshops related to folk music and folk dance.

“Youth are also given training for all these. Not only this, the youth are also trained in the traditional Nagaland style of apparel making, tailoring and weaving,” PM Modi said.

Many types of products are made from bamboo in the North-East and the youth of the new generation are also taught to make bamboo products connecting them not only with their culture, but also creating new employment opportunities, he noted.

People at Lidi Kro-u try to make more and more people know about Naga folk-culture, he added.

Accordingly, saying that there will be such cultural styles and traditions in their region, PM Modi called upon the listeners to make such efforts in their respective areas.

“If you are aware of any such unique effort being made somewhere, then you must share that information with me as well,” he added.

Meanwhile, after the broadcast, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio took to Twitter to expressed gratitude to Modi for promoting the State’s vibrant and special culture and acknowledging Lidi Kro-u, who are making sincere efforts to conserve traditional skills and knowledge and educate the younger generation.

As per the AIR Kohima, Lidi Kro-u Society Kohima village has expressed gratitude to PM Modi for recognition and sharing their story with the whole country via Mann Ki Baat Programme.

It further thanked Modi for empowering and uplifting the rural areas and for his continued efforts and promotion of the rich cultural heritage.

Stating that being featured in the programme has been a huge morale booster, the Lidi Kro-u society expressed hope that they would continue to promote, teach and pass on the traditions to the younger generation, the report said.

It must be note here that Lidi Kro-u, was formed by a group of likeminded women from different khels (sectors) of Kohima village.

As per the organisation, they came together with the idea of preservation and promotion of the traditional skills and knowledge of the Angamis of Kohima village concerned with apparent lack of knowledge of traditional practices among younger generation and diminishing usages of traditional items and work.

Among the trainings they impart are weaving traditional headgear (tsüla do dojükecü) and rice pounding and cleaning (ketsü thu mu pekhrei kecü) for young boys and girls.

First formed in 2012 and registered as a society since 2019, Lidi Kro-u, according to the AIR report, has 8 founding members and around 100 members presently.

It continues to impart traditional skills, folklores, cultural songs and traditional practices to interested youngsters.
