After witnessing a drop in the weekly Covid-19 positivity rate from 13 per cent to 8 per cent last week (June12-18), the State’s positivity rate rose to 9 per cent, an increase by one percent this current week (June 19-25).

It may be recalled that the state Health minister S Pangnyu Phom on June 19 disclosed that as per the directives of the Centre, the ongoing lockdown would continue in the state till the Covid-19 positivity rate dropped below 5 percent.

Six districts– Tuensang, Phek, Wokha, Zunheboto, Peren and Mon have reported an increase in Covid-19 positive cases from the past week with the highest increase in Peren district.

Despite a sharp decline in positive cases the previous week (631 cases between June 12-18), the state recorded an increase in the number of cases this week (662 cases between June 19-25), Health (H&FW) department’s weekly bulletin released on Saturday stated.

While informing that one superspreader event was reported from Mon, the department said that a total of 37 cases, with a positivity rate of 40%, was reported from a prison in Mon.

It further said that three districts– Kohima (13%), Mokokchung (13%) and Peren (12%) have recorded a weekly sample positivity rate of more than 10%. Dimapur, which the most affected district during the second wave of Covid-19, recorded the lowest weekly positivity rate in the state at 7% (including Kiphire district).

Decline in deaths: Meanwhile, Nagaland saw a marked decline in Covid-19 deaths this week. As compared to the previous week (22 deaths between June12-18), only 14 deaths were registered this week, the lowest weekly deaths in eight weeks. H&FW further noted that the 7-day moving average of new cases have reduced to 84 from 305 cases at the peak of the wave.

State logs 91 fresh cases, 6 deaths: Nagaland on Saturday registered 91 fresh Covid-19 positive cases and six deaths.

Of the fresh cases, 48 were reported from Kohima, Dimapur-20, nine in Mokokchung, six in Tuensang, four in Zunheboto, three in Peren and one in Phek, taking the total caseload to24,850.

Further, four deaths were reported in Dimapur and one each in Mokokchung and Phek, pushing the death toll to 487 (including 14 non-Covid deaths but with Covid positivity).

Covid 2nd wave not yet over, warns Centre

NEW DELHI, JUN 26 (AGENCIES): Centre warned that the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic is not yet over in India, with 75 districts of the country still having more than 10% prevalence of Covid-19 cases, while 92 districts have a 5 to 10% prevalence.

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) director general Dr Balram Bhargava underlined the need for district level monitoring of test positivity rate to ensure any outbreak is contained locally and a major third wave is averted.

Currently, 565 districts have weekly test positivity at less than 5%. However, 75 districts still have over 10% positivity, whereas 92 districts have positivity rate between 5-10%. Researchers said scaling up vaccinations could play an important role in mitigating any eventuality and future waves of the disease.
