World Bank team in Nagaland for ‘enhancing landscape & eco-system management project’

The World Bank team is currently in Nagaland for four day visit in connection with ‘Enhancing Landscape and Eco-System Management Project’ (ELEMENT).

The project is about restoring and strengthening landscapes in Nagaland to empower communities to take scientific and informed decisions in addressing climate change, ownership, local economy, biodiversity and improve ecosystem services.

The project pillars would surround on adopting climate smart models that protect and conserve community forests, support green growth and sustainable livelihood enhancement and provisioning ecosystem services.

In his keynote address at the introductory programme of the visit of World Bank team here today at Hotel Vivor, Y Kikheto Sema, Agriculture Production Commissioner (APC), Nagaland, said that the farming community will gain maximum benefit from this project, which is going to be the first project between the World Bank and Agri & allied departments after 59 years of Nagaland’s statehood.

The project will involve around Rs. 647 crore with 80% funding by the World Bank and 20 % as state share. He said the project will enhance the state not only ecologically but also economically, by being sustainable and creating employment opportunities.

“We are looking at it ecologically,” he said adding that the state is looking to provide 1 lakh employment opportunities to the young entrepreneurs through coffee plantation up to 15,000 hectares.

“A landscape approach,” according to ELEMENT, means taking both a geographical and socio-economic approach to managing the land, water and forest resources that form the foundation—the natural capital—for meeting goals of food security and inclusive green growth.

Pyush Dogra, Sr Environmental Specialist said that the World Bank is happy to work with the state of Nagaland and look forward toward the success of the project.  

Other World Bank team members included Avanish Kant, Sr Environmental Specialist (ETC); Dr Ajit Patnaik, IFS (Retd), former PCCF, Consultant (forestry); Aditi Paul, Consultant; and Nandini Chowdhary, Consultant.

Meanwhile, the core and technical support committee meeting with the Work Bank team has been scheduled on August 30 at the APC conference hall, Kohima from 10:30 AM onwards.

The team will also visit the Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre, follow by coordination meeting with agri & allied departments (including Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Rural Development and GIS Nagaland) at Secretariat Conference Hall.

The team will also be visiting Boke- Botsa Project (Naga Integrated Settled Farming), Jhum Field at Tseminyu and Khonoma (Agro- Forestry) on August 31.

They will also visit the Springshed Coffee plantation at Kohima on September 1. Later, they will meet Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Chief Secretary J Alam on the same day.
