Zhavame Village Council celebrates 50 years of its formation

The administration of Zhavame village that came under the Village Council in the year 1973 as per the enactment of Nagaland Village, Area and Regional Councils Act, 1970 today commemorated 50 years of the Zhavame Village Council (ZVC) under the theme ‘Envisioning for brighter future’ at Pame Tsüdu, Zhavame.

As per the Village Council record, there are a total of 1,215 households with a population of 4,941, making it one of the biggest Chakhesang villages under Phek district. The village also comprises of three sub-councils namely, Dume, Pame and Khrome and 7 khels viz. Krocha, Dukru, Movi, Pame, Pohena, Z. Domeh and R. Domeh respectively. 

In its formative years, the functioning and administrative powers of the Zhavame Village Council were performed by the Zaochime/Zhosüme and the Muvu (Chieftain). However, the advent of Christianity also paved way for more power and responsibility for the village council. Subsequently, the first Customary Law was drafted in 2001 under the chairmanship of P. Paul Dukru, who was also the longest serving Village Council Chairman. The Customary Law book was officially released during the first Zhavame Day held on January 6, 2020. 

93-year-old, Sova Rhi, the oldest man of Zhavame, who graced the Golden Jubilee Celebration as the specially honoured citizen sought traditional blessings while spelling out his wishes for the village. He also urged upon everyone to live as one under the guidance of the village council, which he described as the guardian of the village. 

In his message, Village Council Chairman of Zhavame, Zao Krocha stated that the growth of the village council over the past five decades is a testament to the hard work, dedication and resilience of each resident, past and present. Reflecting on the 50-year journey, he honoured the pioneers who laid the foundation for the village community and also appreciated the efforts of every individual who has contributed to its development. “From enhancing infrastructure to fostering a sense of belonging, our achievements are a collective result of the passion and commitment of every individual,” he remarked. 

Krocha further exuded hope that the Jubilee Celebration would bring them together, strengthen their bond and also showcase the unique spirit that defines the ancestry of Zhavame. “Together, let us embark on the next chapter of growth and prosperity,” he stated. He also sought the continued cooperation of all the citizens in the days to come. 

Highlights of the event included unveiling of the monolith during which Sarhünyi John Krocha said the invocation and Lucas Dukru was the chairperson. In the inaugural session, the invocation was said by Rev Akha Shupao, Pastor, Baptist Church, Zhavame while Vivotso Domeh, Convenor of Organising Committee said the welcome note, and P Paul Dukru, longest serving VCC formally released the Jubilee Souvenir. Sanyi Krocha, Ex-Chairman and Medovi Rhi, President of Naga Students’ Federation brought greetings on the occasion. 

Other highlights included folk tune, folk song by Zhavame Women Society, vote of thanks by Ngapunyi Krocha, Secretary, Organising Committee and benediction by Dakhru Rhi, Pastor, Christian Revival Church, Zhavame. Deo Movi, Member of Organising Committee was the chairperson. Competitions in the category of Pfusholü (folk song), Hake Hüchio and Tsükhao Chio were also held.
