The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) on Wednesday informed the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, that plans are underway for comprehensive slope protection along the Dimapur-Kohima stretch of NH-29, amid continuing concerns over recurring landslides, rockfalls and road damage.
Resuming the hearing of PIL (Suo Moto) four-lane construction on National Highway 29 from Dimapur –Kohima, the Division Bench of Justice Yarenjungla Longkumer and Justice Pranjal Das took note of compliance affidavits filed by NHIDCL authorities , in pursuance of its earlier directions.

According to the affidavit, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for slope protection measures along the entire stretch of the existing Dimapur-Kohima road, covering Packages 1, 2 and 3, is currently under preparation.
The DPR consultant is expected to submit the final DPR by June 30, 2026.
The court was informed that after submission of the final DPR, it would be sent to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for approval, following which the Notice Inviting Tender (NIT) would be issued.
The Bench also sought an approximate timeline for completion of these subsequent steps.

With regard to Package 3, spanning 14.21 km and comprising road works, bridge works, RCC box tunnel project and slope protection works, NHIDCL submitted that road works, including bridge works, are expected to be completed by May 31, 2026, while the RCC box tunnel project is targeted for completion by June 2027.
Slope protection works under the package were stated to have been completed by April 24.
A representative of NHIDCL further submitted that documents for issuance of the completion certificate had already been submitted, and the certificate would be issued within one month after necessary verification.
Taking note of the submissions, the Bench orally directed the NHIDCL authorities to place on record the status of the completion certificate, updated timelines for the remaining works, and progress relating to the DPR for comprehensive slope protection measures.
The matter has been listed for further hearing on June 3.
