Puri, (Odisha), April 23 (MExN): Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) Speaker Sharingain Longkumer has called for due cognisance of every disqualification petition received under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution and action according to its nature to ensure efficient and fair judgment.
Longkumer made the remarks while attending the second meeting of the ‘Committee of Presiding Officers to Review the Powers of Presiding Officers under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution and the Rules made thereunder”, held in Puri, Odisha on April 21.
He was accompanied by the Secretary of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and other officials.
During the deliberations, Longkumer also shared his insights and experiences on matters relating to disqualification under the anti-defection law. He underscored the importance of upholding democratic principles and respecting the basic structure of the Constitution.
The meeting was a continuation of earlier discussions held in Maharashtra and brought together senior legal experts, including senior counsel, a retired Advocate General of Maharashtra, and the current Advocate General of Odisha.
According to an NLA release, the committee chairman, the Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, announced that a draft set of recommendations would be prepared and circulated to all member states.
States will submit their views and suggestions for incorporation before the next meeting, scheduled to be held in Mangalore from June 13 to 15, 2026.
Following the Mangalore meeting, the final recommendations are expected to be prepared and adopted at a subsequent meeting to be hosted in Nagaland, the release added.
