Mon Wildlife Division inaugurated
Mon, April 23 (MExN): Principal Secretary, Environment, Forests & Climate Change (DoEF&CC), Y. Kikheto Sema on Wednesday cautioned that Article 371(A) would not protect Nagaland from the growing impacts of climate change, urging people to act collectively to safeguard the environment.
“Climate change is no more barking at us but biting us,” he said while speaking at the inauguration of the Mon Wildlife Division at Forest Colony, Mon Town. He called on citizens to preserve wildlife, protect forests and plant more trees.
The Mon Wildlife Division was inaugurated by C L John in the presence of Kikheto Sema and Vedpal Singh.
In his inaugural address, the Minister said community participation was essential for protecting wildlife species and conserving forests. He appealed to civil society organisations such as the Konyak Union, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong, Konyak Students’ Union and church leaders to join hands in preserving nature and the environment.
As per the State DIPR, he also expressed gratitude to the State Government and the department for establishing the new division and urged officials to run the office with sincerity and responsibility.
Vedpal Singh, in his opening remarks, said people were increasingly realising the effects of climate change and that attitudes were changing from hunting towards conservation. He added that several villages and organisations, including the Konyak Union and Konyak Students’ Union, were now actively protecting wildlife.
Konyak Union President, Yamao Konyak, meanwhile, lauded the Government of Nagaland and the department for opening a Forest Beat Office at Chen town and the Wildlife Division at Mon town.
