He also appreciated the cooperative attitude and hard working spirit of the farmers.

Mongküm suggested the farmers to setup a bamboo cluster and put effort in skilling so as to make themselves productive partners of the industry. “As far as Bamboo charcoal is concerned, we don’t have any marketing problem,” he remarked.

Sharing his experience during their recent visit in Bangladesh, Mongküm said, “People of Bangladesh were not as we thought of. They are industrialists and very hardworking people. We have so many natural resources in Nagaland that Bangladesh needs. We need to link them commercially to benefit us.”

In his speech, NBI, Proprietor, K Temjen Jamir said, “NBI has its mission to create wealth and jobs for local people. Our financial constraints became blessing in disguise because that situation compelled us to be more innovative and creative. As a result, we could manufacture not only the charcoals but its producing machineries.”

K Temjen informed that NBI was set up last year in response to the urgent need of the bamboo farmers whose valuable resources were getting wasted for want of buyers.

He mentioned that hundreds of farmers in Nagaland grew bamboo in thousands of acres of land to meet the needs for paper mill at Tuli. ‘However, the paper mill could not function and was consequently shut down to the utter dismay, and lose of hope of thousands of bamboo farmers,’ he cited.

‘At this juncture of economic dilemma,’ the NBI has been ‘“set up as an alternative to the Tuli Paper mill in the bamboo farming area itself under the jurisdiction of Akhoya village which is about 15 kilometers away from Changtongya town.’

He added that Akhoya village was selected to set up the bamboo industry considering the availability of bamboo in abundance in the region as well as in the neighbouring districts.

“I am particularly proud to announce that not only its products but even the large size charcoal burning kilns, charcoal crushing machine, bamboo section machine and charcoal briquettes making machines are made of Nagaland Bamboo Industry. All are made in Nagaland,” he said.

K Temjen also highlighted that the industry has been set up and started its production without electricity connection and proper motor road. It runs on diesel generator.

“The NBI has neither taken any help from government nor loan from the bank. We received generous support from friends and relatives that helped us to install the plant and resume production within 12 months of the conception of this idea,” he stated.

Further, he added that the bamboo charcoal manufactured locally by NBI has been tested at Faer Labs Pvt Ltd, Gurugram, Haryana and “it tested fit to roll out in the market.”
